River Blindness being eliminated...

A combination of the generosity of "Big Pharma" and the work of organisations like the Carter Centre have achieved the elimination of River Blindness in Columbia, with other countries like Mexico and Ecuador close behind.

The parasitic worm that causes the blindness is spread by a species of blackfly.  This article in the NY Times from 1987 announced the free supply by Merck of the necessary drugs.

It looks like that triumph of human spirit is bearing fruit...
